about the PDA - Classroom Assistant

What qualifications do you need?

No formal entry requirements are needed although experience in an educational setting is preferred.

Do you need experience with children?

No. Although experience of working with children would be an advantage it is not a necessary requirement of the course.

Is there a placement?

Yes. You will attend placement in a primary school.

Who organises the placement?

The college has established links with many primary schools and will arrange student placement for you.

Is it a Full Time or Part Time course?

Courses are Part Time and usually start in August or September and finish in June.

Will my placement be local?

In choosing a suitable work placement for you, the college will take into consideration where you live and access to local transport.

What about assessment?

Continuous, with a mix of practical and theoretical assessments.

What is the age range of students on the course?

There is a wide age range of students who are either returning to work or pursuing a career change.

What can my qualification lead to?

Employment as a classroom assistant within a Local Authority.

What does the course work consist of?

Candidates have to complete six credits to achieve the qualification.

• The role of the classroom assistant in supporting the work of the teacher and supporting the well-being of the pupils
• Child development
• Organisation and use of resources

Optional Units (2 to be studied from choice of 7):

1. Promoting positive behaviour
2. Accident and emergency procedures
3. Child protection
4. Promoting play
5. Supporting learning using computers
6. Working with children with special needs
7. Introduction to computers
